Mongolian professor returns after hoisting flag in Antarctica

Professor Lhamsuren Dugerjav of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, the leader of the Antarctica Research Association in Mongolia, arrived home on Saturday after a journey to the southernmost point of the surface on the earth. He hoisted the Mongolian flag in Antarctic on 10th January 2013.

Family, friends and the press were waiting for him at Chinggis khan airport at 10:30 am on February 9th.

When Professor Lhamsuren Dugerjav reached Antarctica the temperature was -37 degree Celsius. He said the first thing he realized about the “zero point” of Antarctica was the ice is in constant movement. This is why the “zero point” is annually updated due to the movement of the ice.

Professor Lhamsuren Dugerjav was to choose a place to establish the Mongolian Geology and Research base. There were three proposed sites, but the professor chose Luncston Island in Antarctica to build a geologic mapping centre.

The southernmost point on the surface of the earth, Antarctica is 25,000 km from Ulaanbaatar city. Even though it is far away, now there is concurrence from all that a Geology Research base should be established in Antarctica.

Professors and researchers are still looking for hints of the possibility of habitation for humankind in Antarctica, or looking for ways for humans to survive in such harsh temperature and weather.
